Ann Packer is a freelance writer who loves textiles. She learned to sew from her mother, to knit from her grandmother and to be thrifty in all things from an extended family of aunts.
A Massey University graduate and qualified teacher, Ann has worked across the arts spectrum from community arts to the International Festival. She also enjoys recording and abstracting oral history.
An accidental journalist, Ann started writing features for lifestyle magazines and Wellington's now defunct Evening Post newspaper between arts festivals. She has been a children's book reviewer for 20 years and currently contributes features and reviews – everything from books and the arts to houses, design and travel – to The Dominion Post, NZ House & Garden, New Zealand Quilter and The Listener.
In 2004, she wrote the sell-out Crafty Girls' Road Trip for Random House (revised 2006), followed two years later by the Montana-winning Stitch: Contemporary New Zealand Textile Artists. A completely revised and redesigned Crafty Girls' Road Trip has just been published by Random House.
Ann is currently working on a biography of visionary New Zealand stitch artist Malcolm Harrison.
